Nebraska Electoral Vote Plan Stalls.
Published: Sep. 25, 2024
Nebraska state lawmaker Mike McDonnell has thrown a wrench into Donald Trump's plans to change the state's electoral college system, potentially impacting the 2024 presidential election. McDonnell, who recently switched from Democrat to Republican, has declared he will oppose any attempt to shift Nebraska's system to a winner-takes-all model before the election, effectively blocking Trump and his allies' efforts.
McDonnell's decision comes after Trump and his team, including Senator Lindsey Graham, had been lobbying Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen to call a special session to alter the state's electoral vote allocation. The goal was to eliminate the current system where Nebraska's five electoral votes are split based on the popular vote in each congressional district, a system that has favored Democrats in recent elections.
The current system allows for a "blue dot" in Nebraska – the 2nd Congressional District – to award its electoral vote to the Democratic presidential candidate, even if the state overall votes for the Republican candidate. Trump and his allies believed that changing this system to a winner-takes-all model, where all five electoral votes would go to the candidate who wins the state-wide popular vote, would significantly benefit their campaign.
McDonnell's opposition to the change leaves Trump and his team in a precarious position. They had hoped to capitalize on Nebraska's electoral votes to secure a victory in the 2024 election, potentially tipping the scales in their favor. Without the support of McDonnell, who had been considered a potential swing vote, their strategy now appears to be in jeopardy.
Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to express his disappointment with McDonnell's decision, calling him a "Grandstander!" He lamented the missed opportunity to "get in the way of a great Republican, common sense, victory." The future of Nebraska's electoral college system remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: McDonnell's decision has significantly altered the landscape of the 2024 presidential election.
