In an unexpected turn of events for Major League Baseball (MLB), the Oakland Athletics made a groundbreaking hire. A woman is stepping into a role no other has held before, blazing a new trail in the league's history. But who could this pioneer be?
Jenny Cavnar, recognized for her work with the Colorado Rockies, is this history-making woman. The Athletics revealed on Tuesday that Jenny will be the team's primary play-by-play announcer, making her the first woman to hold that position in MLB's history.
Cavnar, a known figure among the Rockies and Broncos fanbase, has served the Colorado Rockies in more ways than one. She functioned as a backup play-by-play announcer and pre- and postgame host for the past 12 years. Known for her humor, she once joked around with Vinny Castilla, special assistant to the Rockies' general manager, and Denver Broncos' fullback Andy Janovich at the UC Healthy Swings Charity Home Run Derby in Coors Field, Denver in 2019.
Her credentials don't stop there. She is no stranger to accolades as she is a five-time Emmy winner and was named Colorado Sportscaster of the Year in 2021. Her love for the game shines through her achievements, originating from her childhood as a coach's daughter. She expressed her enthusiasm about the sport and its history in a statement to MLB.com, where she described the opportunity to work with the Oakland A's as "a dream come true".
Reflecting on her career and the path women have treaded in the world of sports during a SiriusXM radio interview, she stated, "I share in the fact that there's been so many other women before me who have carved out their opportunities, taken their trails and blazed them, and we're just going to keep going." Jenny Cavnar's risen to an essential role in MLB is a testament to the strides taken by women in sports, and she's prepared to proceed setting the trail aflame.
